INDUSTRIAL USES OF PERLITE AND VERMICULITE

Perlite and vermiculite both have some interesting properties which make them useful in a number of industrial applications. They are lightweight, fireproof, non-toxic and non-hazardous. They can be produced in a number of different sizes, and expanded to different densities. And they can both hold water, and other liquids such as oils, nutrients, chemical mixtures, and special coatings.


Because of these rather unique properties, vermiculite and perlite are both used in a number of special industrial uses ranging from insulation in cryogenic tanks and trailers (perlite), to absorbent packing in lab packs (vermiculite), to filtration medias (perlite). They have been used as fillers in plastics, as aggregates in well cements, and as abrasives.

A complete listing of perlite and vermiculte's many "industrial" uses would be extensive. Nevertheless here are some basic applications which have been recognized throughout the world:
