THE SCHUNDLER COMPANY

AN EXPLANATION OF OUR OCCASIONAL FUEL SURCHARGES

Expanding perlite and vermiculite uses a lot of heat, and to generate this heat we use natural gas.

Unfortunately, the cost of gas can be very unpredictable, and can be affected by wars, weather, political unrest, and international affairs. As a result, we occasionally have had to include fuel surcharges in our prices.

These fuel surcharges are not being charged to offset the cost of shipping our products to you, nor to compensate for the fuel surcharges we are being charged by companies shipping raw materials to us. Instead, they are necessary whenever very large increases in our fuel cost cannot be absorbed.

Each regular bag of perlite, for instance, we may use 0.5 to 0.75 therms of energy. The following table shows the cost of a decatherm (one therm times 10) of natural gases. From this you can see how much more expensive our gas is, you can see what an impact it has on our processing cost, and why we have had to pass along at least part of these increases to our customers.

Please be assured that we will eliminate these surcharges as soon as we can!
